What is a Makting Charge?
A makting charge (also called a making charge or craftsmanship fee) is the amount jewelers add on top of the raw gold rate for the work involved in crafting a piece. In Dubai’s Gold Souk, makting charges typically range from AED 3–15 per gram depending on the complexity of the piece. Simple chains are on the lower end; intricate filigree work commands higher charges. Always ask the jeweler for the makting charge separately.

Is VAT Charged on Gold in Dubai?
Gold jewelry: 5% VAT applies at point of sale. Gold bars and investment coins: VAT-exempt. Tourists visiting Dubai can reclaim the 5% VAT paid on jewelry at Dubai International Airport’s Planet Tax Free kiosks before departure — effectively making jewelry 5% cheaper for tourists.
